Documentary Spotlight

Powwow People

Powwow People is an immersive, vérité-style documentary rooted in the experience of a contemporary Native gathering. Structured around the arc of a single day, the film follows four central figures: Gina Bluebird, who shapes the powwow and guides its setup with care and authority; Ruben Littlehead, a magnetic MC whose voice grounds the present moment; Jamie John, a non-binary dancer imagining the future of these traditions; and Freddie Cozad, a singer and drummer whose reflections echo generations past.

The film culminates in a breathtaking Northern Traditional dance special, enveloping the viewer in the rhythm, movement, and communal energy of the powwow. Both a celebration and a contemplation, Powwow People is a rich portrait of a living, complex Native community—and a powerful testament to the continuity of Indigenous life.
