How the West Was One
Documentary Spotlight

How the West Was One

In a contemporary reimagining of the American West, three young women — a snake hunter, a New York artist, and a rodeo queen — challenge the idea of who is permitted to be a cowgirl.

This documentary follows three unconventional cowgirls across the U.S. as they redefine their visions of the American West. Filmmaker Annie Bercy escapes her quarantine in Queens to seek creative inspiration, discovering the overlooked history of Black Cowboys which forever alters her art. In Miami, Latina designer Elle Barbeito explores themes of identity and survival through leatherwork, using invasive Burmese Pythons as material. On the West Coast, rodeo queen Morgan Laughlin prepares for the “Miss Rodeo America” pageant while pursuing her agricultural dreams. Each woman fights for recognition and autonomy, illustrating that they can forge their own paths in a world of predetermined roles.
